Job Description

Position: Health Safety Environmental and Security Coordinator

Context

The HSSE Coordinator supports the Nexans Charleston submarine cable manufacturing plant through the positions responsibilities.

Purpose

Coordinate the operational activities required to insure compliance with Nexans and statutory regulations governing workplace health, safety and environmental. Be a collaborative and inspirational leader to employees in activities designed to continuously improve the safety and environmental aspects of the work environment.  Assist the HSSE Manager with safety and security of the facility and grounds through management of on-site security and off-site emergency personnel. Be an active member of the Nexans HSE network. Maintain and apply knowledge of current policies, regulations, and industrial processes.

Areas of responsibility

  • Assist the HSSE Manager in developing, implementing, and maintaining HSSE standard operating procedures and policies.
  • Works with HSSE Manager and departments to develop and execute the HSSE strategic plan (roadmap).
  • Maintains inventories of various PPE and first aid supplies to insure adequate supply is available and distribution is controlled.
  • Participates in the design, purchase, installation, and commissioning processes of new or modified equipment to insure adequate HSSE measures are in place. In addition, ensuring a risk assessment (JSA) and safe work instructions (SWI) have been completed.
  • Utilize Synergi to co-manage projects with the HSSE Manager and other departments so that action steps and time requirements needed are identified and managed so that projects don’t overtake daily duties, job responsibilities, and the position’s annual objectives.
  • Support the HSSE Manager and department supervisors with the identification, submission, and tracking of corrective actions from Nexans hazard assessment tools such as facility inspections, SUSA’s, Take 5’s, Synergi cases, SAP work orders, and JSA’s.
  • Encourage and support people to become or stay involved in HSSE. Examples include leading safety meetings, using hazard assessment tools, participating in safety committees and audits.
  • Coordinates facility and equipment inspections with departments to identify HSSE hazards and to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Facilitates annual departmental SDS review. Ensures MSDS Online reflects the chemicals the plant uses. Reviews departmental chemical approval requests. 
  • Assist HSSE Manager and other departments in the development, maintenance, and retention of training course outlines, materials, and records.
  • Conduct or coordinate employee training in areas such as safety laws and regulations, hazardous condition monitoring, and use of safety equipment.
  • Coordinates and oversees qualification programs designed to insure safe operation and inspection of equipment or machinery (Forklifts, Cranes, Fall Protection, etc.).
  • Support the success of the Safety Team by supporting its mission, charter, goals, and its operations.
  • Maintains bulletin boards with current/relevant HSSE information.
  • Maintains certification as the Radiation Safety Officer; ensures compliance to all applicable Federal NRC and DHEC Title B State regulations; monitors radiation exposure levels to employees and facility.
  • Conduct or direct testing of air quality, noise, temperature, or radiation levels to verify compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Assists with injury case management and engagement with workers compensation agency and medical professionals to ensure proper care of injured workers.

Requested Competencies and Qualifications

Qualifications

  •  BA or BS from accredited college – preferred in Occupational Health & Safety 
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the field of health, safety and environmental in a Manufacturing environment
  • Preferred Radiation Safety Officer certification
  • Training facilitator experience and knowledgeable of training software programs
  • Three to five years of wire and cable experience preferred
  • Must have excellent verbal, written and presentation skills. Organizational skills are essential.
  • Willingness to flex hours to accommodate training needs on various schedules
