Fiber Optic Technician
Context
- Work within a high-voltage submarine power cable manufacturing environment where optical fibers are embedded for monitoring and diagnostics
- Handle fiber systems integrated into complex insulation and shielding structures under strict electrical, thermal, and mechanical conditions
- Perform splicing, handling, and testing under controlled processes with strong focus on quality, traceability, and accuracy
- Support both production and quality functions by ensuring fiber integrity throughout manufacturing
- Verify incoming materials, execute precision splicing, and perform advanced optical testing including OTDR analysis
- Connect and maintain monitoring systems during production processes
- Interpret measurement data to identify and troubleshoot issues in embedded fiber systems
Purpose
- Execute precision splicing and advanced optical testing to support product quality and compliance
- Ensure performance, integrity, and reliability of fiber optic systems within high-voltage submarine cables
- Verify incoming fiber optic materials against technical specifications prior to use
- Produce accurate and traceable measurement data for quality and customer requirements
- Identify and resolve optical issues to reduce production risk and rework
- Maintain high standards of workmanship, discipline, and equipment readiness
- Support development of internal expertise in fiber optic splicing and testing
- Maintain tools, equipment, and workspace in optimal condition
- Drive continuous improvement in fiber optic processes and methods
Responsibilities
- Perform high-precision fusion splicing in accordance with specialized procedures
- Conduct advanced optical testing, including OTDR, for incoming inspection and final validation
- Analyze OTDR traces and measurement data to detect defects and performance issues
- Generate detailed and traceable test reports
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot fiber optic equipment
- Develop and update procedures and work instructions
- Manage inventory and condition of tools and initiate replacement or procurement as needed

Expected Competencies and Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of fiber optic principles including splicing, attenuation, and loss mechanisms
- Hands-on experience with fiber splicing and OTDR testing
- Ability to interpret advanced optical measurements beyond basic pass/fail criteria
- Skilled in precision fiber handling and use of specialized tools
- High attention to detail and adherence to quality standards
- Strong communication and documentation skills
- Willingness to learn specialized processes in a controlled environment
- Prior fiber optic experience strongly preferred; technical aptitude and manual skill considered
- Experience in manufacturing, lab, or quality-controlled environments preferred
- Proficient computer skills
- Good color vision
